UN report says Latin America is most violent region of the world for women:

v  In a report presented in Panama, UN Women and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) found that Latin America and the Caribbean is the most violent region in the world for women.

v  Three of the 10 countries with the highest rates of rape of women and girls were in the Caribbean, the report said.

v  According to the Report, in the Northern Triangle (Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala) and Mexico the problem of femicide and violence against women has reached epidemic levels, in many cases with links to organized crime.

v  Central America's Northern Triangle is considered the most dangerous area in the world outside war zones, mainly because of rampant gangs and drug cartels.

Preparatory visit of Experts for 36th International Geological Congress in Delhi:

v  36th International Geological Congress (IGC) is to be held in Delhi, India in the year 2020.

v  A high level delegation of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) comprising its President, Prof. Qiuming Cheng; Prof. S C Finney, Secretary General; and Prof. H Kitazato, Treasurer visited India during 20-24 November 2017 to discussthe preparatory aspects of the Congress.

v  Described as the Olympics of Geosciences, the IGCs are held quadrennially under the aegis of the IUGS through a process of global bidding.

v  India won the bid in 2012 at Brisbane, Australia to host the Congress in 2020. The win is a remarkable achievement as the event makes a come back to the Indian soil after nearly 6 decades much to the excitement of the entire geo-scientific community.

v  The event is being jointly funded by the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Earth Sciences with the active support of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and the Science Academies of the other neighbouring co-host countries, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Kyrgystan Gets New President:

v  Sooronbai Jeenbekov became Kyrgyzstan's new president on Friday in a ceremony marking the first peaceful transfer of power between elected leaders in the Central Asian country.

v  The former Soviet republic saw its first two presidents overthrown in revolts in 2005 and 2010, with ethnic violence leaving hundreds dead after the second revolt. 

v  Kyrgyzstan hosts a Russian military base and is a member of a Moscow-led trade bloc, but leans heavily on next-door China for loans and investments. Kyrgyzstan is alone in hosting competitive votes in Central Asia, a region defined by corruption and an authoritarian political culture. 

Emmerson Mnangagwa to Sworn-in as the new President of Zimbabwe:

v  Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to be sworn in as president on Friday, marking the final chapter of a political drama that toppled his predecessor Robert Mugabe after a military takeover.

v  Mugabe had ruled since Zimbabwean independence in 1980, exercising almost total authority to crush any sign of dissent. Zimbabwe's once-promising economy collapsed under Mugabe's rule, and many hope Mnangagwa will push through reforms to bring in investment.

Maruti-Suzuki India becomes largest passenger Car Exporter from India:

v  Maruti Suzuki India has become the largest passenger cars exporter from India in the first half of the ongoing fiscal, dethroning Hyundai Motor India Ltd which has now been pushed to the fourth spot behind Volkswagen and General Motors.

v  In the April-September period this fiscal, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) exported 57,300 units of passenger cars as against 54,008 units in the year-ago period, up 6 per cent, according to the latest data by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

v  The long-running number one exporter, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on the other hand shipped 44,585 units as against 63,014 units in the year-ago period, a decline of 29.25 per cent. 

Anupam Khe starrer film “Kheer” won Best International Short Film Award:

v  Veteran actor Anupam Kher starrer short film 'Kheer' has recently bagged the Best International Short Film award at the Vancouver international film festival.

v  The film is almost seven minutes long and got 1.5 lakh views in a day.
